Winston-Salem is the westernmost city in the Triad region of North Carolina that includes also Greensboro and High Point. It sits in between the Sauratown Mountains to the north and the northernmost edge of the Uwharrie Mountains to the south. As with central and eastern North Carolina, most of the land isn’t conducive to waterfalls, but there are some nonetheless, primarily in Hanging Rock State Park.
The city itself is pretty dingy as of now thanks to its original boom as the unofficial cigarette capital of the country, but there have been recent attempts to clean up and modernize the city thanks to an influx of hipsters moving in to open up breweries, restaurants, and other businesses as part of the city’s growing nanotechnology trend. Additionally the city is home to the corporate headquarters for BB&T Bank, Hanes, Krispy Kreme, K&W Cafeteria, and Texas Pete.
