Just before it meets the Hudson River, the wide Mohawk River makes a steep drop in the town of Cohoes, just north of Albany, creating Cohoes Falls. Although you aren’t really close enough to appreciate just how massive it is, Cohoes Falls has been compared to Niagara Falls in terms of width and volume.
From the intersection of Highways 787 and 32 in Cohoes, head north on Highway 787 for a little over a mile. The parking area will be on the left.
From the parking area, cross the street and take the footbridge over the canal and over to the viewing area for the falls. Because of the trees growing on the bank, it may be difficult to get a good view of the entire falls. You can continue down several steps and a paved path for a view of the back half of the falls, but it won’t provide you with a full view.
