Overview:
Shunkawauken Falls is right beside a backroad that scales White Oak Mountain. There’s not an official place to park, but you should be able to get on enough of the shoulder to let any cars pass. The view you get is at least 150 feet tall, but the falls continue down the mountain on the other side of the road. However, there’s no way to see what the rest looks like. It’s best to view the falls in the spring or after a good rain since Horse Creek, which feeds the falls, rises a short distance from the falls at the top of the mountain and is contained by two small dams.
Directions:
From Exit 163 off of US 74 in Columbus, head west on NC highway 108 toward downtown Columbus. Drive about 1.3 miles and turn right onto Houston Road. Drive another mile and turn left onto Live Oak Lane, OR, take the next left onto White Oak Mountain Drive if you miss it. The falls are about 2 miles up the road.
