Green Mountain Falls – which may not even be its actual name – is a glorified mountain runoff that, outside of drought conditions, always has some flow to it, which in my book qualifies it as an official waterfall. It’s nothing special and you’ll get the idea just by driving by it on US 221. It starts as a slide before freefalling about 15 feet into a small pool. The creek then passes beneath the highway before sliding another few feet and disappearing into the forest.
From the intersection of US 221 and US 321 in Blowing Rock, the falls are about 8.7 miles down US 221 South on the right side – right at the Watauga and Avery County line.
